The world of eSports has evolved greatly throughout the decades. In the age of technology, games within the industry skyroceket to the popularity and spontaneously fade away almost daily. However, every once in a while a special type of game will enter the esports scene and completely dominate. These 10 titles are some of the biggest games in esports and have each found ways of breaking the mold and holding their own against millions of other games. Here are 10 of the biggest games in esports!

1. League of Legends

Originating in 2009 by Riot Games, the multiplayer battle online arena or MOBA game is without a doubt one of the most popular esports games on the planet. The game is a major test of strategy and boasts several different champions to choose from. The game has attracted partnerships with major companies such as 5-Hour Energy, Monster Energy, Snickers, Twitch, Intel, Alienware, Turtle Beach, and more. In 2017, the game brought in a total of $2.1 Billion USD in revenue for Riot Games. The LOL 2018 World Championship currently has the 6th largest prize pool in the world at a total $6.4 million dollars. 

2. CounterStrike: Global Offensive

Counter Strike: Global Offensive was developed by Valve, Global Offensive is the 4th title in the Counter-Strike series. The game quickly became a major favorite for esports tournaments with the largest prize pool being $1.5 million USD at the WESG 2016.

3. Overwatch

Overwatch was developed by Blizzard Entertainment and released in 2016. The game boasts a roster of over 30 heroes to choose from; each having unique abilities. The game is available on XBOX, PlayStation, and Windows systems. The game took the esports world by storm and is known for its uniqueness compared to other prominent 1st person shooters. The highest known prize pool for an Overwatch tournament is $1.7 Million USD which was awarded during the Overwatch League – Season 1 Playoffs. 

4. Dota 2

As the sequel to Defense of the Ancients also known as DotA, DOTA 2 is one of esport’s most complex titles. The game boasts over 100 characters and even more unique weapons and enhancements. The game is highly tactical and requires intense precision. However, for those dedicated to the game the payout is major. DOTA 2 tournaments take the top 5 spots for largest esport tournament pools. The tournaments include all of The International events from 2014-2018, with last year’s tournament prize being over $25 million USD. 

5. Fortnite

The Epic Games title was released in it’s Battle Royale mode in 2017. The game quickly shot to prominence not only in the streaming scene but also the world of esports. While the title is still fairly new, the game has already made major waves in the esports community. In 2018, Epic allocated $100 million USD for tournament prizes; the company did this again for the 2019 tournament season. Fortnite currently has the 25th highest prize pool in the world with their Fortnite Fall Skirmish Series – Week 6 – Grand Finals taking the spot at $1.9 million USD. 

6. Hearthstone

Another award winning game from Blizzard Entertainment, this game is truly different than every other title on our list. Hearthstone is an online digital card game that is based upon the popular game Warcraft. The game uses the same characters, relics, and themes as it’s parent game. The game features several modes of play including ranked matches and drafted arena battles. The game is highly popular in the esports community and is praised for its logic and fast gameplay. The largest recorded prize pool for a Hearthstone tournament is $1 million USD which was awarded at Blizzcon 2016. 

7. Super Smash Bros

The Super Smash Bros franchise originally debuted in 1999 and has come a long way with its most recent title Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being released in 2018. The game has always been prominent in esports with the first Smash tournament being held in 2002. The largest prize pool recorded for Super Smash Bros is $50,000 USD at the 2GGC tournament. 

8. Call of Duty

The franchise was originally released in 2003 and has consistently been a major first-person shooter title for esports tournaments. Many spinoff series such as Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare have also been major players on the esports scene. The largest prize pot for a COD game was for $2 million USD at the Call of Duty XP Championship in 2016. 

9. Rocket League

Yet another unique title on this list, Rocket League is a vehicular soccer game developed by gaming company Psyonix. The game uses rocket powered vehicles to hit soccer balls. Additional game modes allowed the possibility for other sports including air hockey and basketball. The largest prize pool for a Rocket League tournament is $529,000 USD which was awarded during the RLCS Season 7 – Finals. 

10. Street Fighter V

Street Fighter V is a fighting game developed by Capcom and Dimps. The title is available on PlayStation and Windows systems. The Street Fighter series has consistently been popular within the esports community. In 2016, Street Fighter V broke the Evolution Championship Series record for most entrants in a single game with over 5,000 gamers entering into the competition. The largest prize pool for a Street Fighter V tournament took place during the Capcom Cup 2017 with an overall prize of $380,000 USD.
